Who: Daniel and the Lion (CD Release Show) / Bello - CD Release / Elsinore
When: Wed. May 16 8:00PM
Cost: $10 cover
Additional Info: 18 and up. *** TICKETS WILL BE AVAILABLE AT THE DOOR ***

Daniel and the Lion is a touring folk pop band from Wisconsin. Their minimal use of instrumentation focuses primarily on piano, guitar, and percussion, while the heart-felt and beautiful vocals surround the simple, touching lyrics. The sparseness of the music allows for space which I can sink into, appreciating each delicate addition without being overwhelmed. This is definitely a band for fans of acoustic artists such as Bon Iver, Nick Drake, Rocky Votolato and Mason Jennings.

Bello sings together. Their music is about joy and beauty and humanity, because what is more human than three people singing in harmony. Bello is Mike Droho, Ida Jo, & Scott Lamps. All 3 are Madison musicians who are highly accomplished in their own right. Mike Droho and Scott Lamps began making music together ten years ago when they formed the acoustic-pop group The Profits, an upbeat group that was hugely popular with university audiences. In 2007 Droho and Lamps met Ida Jo and formed (with beatboxer Anthony Lamarr) a strings and beat driven group called The Compass Rose. The trio's long musical history is apparent in their intimate vocal stylings and effortless rapport.

“So with Elsinore, well, I guess I should just say that this is one of the most compelling examples of good pop music that I’ve heard in a while.” -- Muzzle of Bees

Who: Pink Lightning / Kitty Rhombus / Dharmonic Deluxe / Tickle Torture
When: Fri. May 18 10:00PM
Cost: $5 cover
Additional Info: 21 and up.

"Aside from being knock-you-on-your-ass great, Lips and Arms (Kitty Rhombus’s studio album) is well thought out through the melody and production. A lot of credit should go to Dustin Sisson who took what could have amounted to a great deal of racket but turned it into a great album. I believe Lips and Arms should prove to be a Madison music beacon. While there aren't many people making the type of music Kitty Rhombus is turning out I can only hope it might inspire more bands to explore their sound." –Josh Trinkner Dane101.

"Pink Lightning's members include a lead guitarist with surfer-style shredding abilities, a solid bass and drums rhythm team, a singer reminiscent of Nick Cave and a man armed with an accordion. As elusive as Pink Lightning may be, it is our hope and ambition here at Real Detroit Weekly to change the fact that very few have heard of this mysterious quintet. For those of you hunting for Pink Lightning, sightings include P.J.'s Lager House and Dally in the Alley."

Dharmonic Deluxe is a Madison four piece band and will be exciting the crowd at the High Noon Saloon in Madison tonight. Come out and show your support!!

Tickle Torture will wow the High Noon audience with sexpop music tonight. Sweet, sweet sexpop.

Who: Adam's 40th B-day Extravaganza / The Arkoffs / Digibot
When: Sat. May 19 5:30PM
Cost: no cover
Additional Info: 21 and up.

Come one, come all; you who love endurance-rock and birthdays with round numbers!
Local scenestzar/rocker/curmudgeon Adam Zar will be turning forty years old/young. He will be chided by local two-car-garage rock behemoths The Arkoffs¹, as well as the made-up-in-a-panic-at-the-last-minute-let's-call-it-improv skronk of ZarBot (formerly Digibot)². These bands only play once in a while, by popular demand! So don't miss out.

Be there or be in Nowheresville, man! Its free if you are.
What? You want more, you overstimulated tweakers? There are somewhat-substantiated rumors of a fully-loaded pretzel bar! With mustard! This is a full Oktoberfest experience without the lederhosen and swastikas. ZarBot may even do a polka!
Be. There.

¹The Arkoffs are a many-splendored thing: let us count the curds and wheys. The rock that rolled over your radio. Two ringers and two string-pingers. They are not on meth. Heck, they're not even allowed to drink 7-up. Do not feed the animals. Sometimes there is a Saxophone. Sometimes there is Trouble. If that happens, blame Zar.
²Formerly and forever. May also contain trace amounts of saxophone.

Who: Foxy Shazam / The Usual Things
When: Sat. May 19 9:30PM
Cost: $15 cover / $13 advance
Additional Info: 18 and up.

Foxy Shazam's music is an unhinged, maniacal mix of piano, guitar, howling vocals, double-kickdrum percussion, and rock & roll theatrics. The quintet hails from Cincinnati, Ohio, where bandmates Eric Nally (vocals), Loren Turner (guitar), Daisy (bass), Sky White (piano), and Joe Halberstadt (drums) first joined forces in 2004. Recording sessions for The Flamingo Trigger began that year and stretched into early 2005, and Foxy Shazam supported the album's June release with a series of headlining show dates. New Weatherman Records took an interest in the band's rambunctious, genre-melding sound, and Foxy Shazam signed to the label before entering the studio for a second time.

Led by singer/songwriter Aaron Shekey (pronounced she-key), The Usual Things mix power pop melodies with southern inspired story telling, reminiscent of their mid-western roots and big city aspirations. Shekey references his own blue-collar family experiences with relatable ambiguity; tales that push the simple, upbeat melodies of the band into surprisingly darker territory.
“Incredible songs and solid musicianship without indie haircuts or too-tight pants. Please God, send more.” -Maximum Ink

A classic case would be Texan singer-songwriter Alejandro Escovedo, who seems to be kicking as much ass in his late 50s as most guys do in their 20s. His shows in recent years have re-connected with his punk-rock past, but also with country and melodies from south of the border. Plus, he's pretty cool about keeping Madison on his tour route.

Who: Kurt Vile & the Violators / Black Bananas / True Widow
When: Mon. May 21 8:00PM
Cost: $15 cover
Additional Info: 18 and up.

Kurt Vile is a lo-fi indie rock singer/songwriter from Philadelphia who made his commercial recording debut in 2008 to much critical fanfare. Based in Philadelphia, Vile grew up outside the city in the nearby town of Lansdowne. His father, a bluegrass aficionado who bought him a banjo, encouraged his passion for music. Vile eventually advanced from the banjo to other instruments, primarily guitar, and began writing songs that he would record at home. These lo-fi home recordings, often featuring drum machines and other one-man-band, lo-fi adornment, were compiled on a series of CD-Rs that Vile would release in limited editions. Meanwhile, in addition to his solo work, Vile began collaborating musically with singer/guitarist Adam Granduciel in 2003.

Black Bananas is set for the next all-inclusive rock and roll crusade, the one that includes even and especially all the shit you don't like, woven into all the shit you can't live without. This has been the name of Jennifer's game from day one; she owns the blueprints and if you don't know by now, don't even bother to Google it, cuz understanding is an investment not an action. Jennifer Herrema is not schizophrenic nor does she don many hats. She is simply a singer and simultaneously, a pioneer of comprehensive non-exclusive opposition rock, and Black Bananas is the latest addition to the oeuvre.
That’s what Black Bananas seems to do best, is capture a moment. It might never be recreated — “ I don’t look back, I don’t think about stuff that already happened,” says Herrema — but it’s exciting to hear and anyway, recreating the same old thing has never been what Herrema’s interested in.“If I don’t deliver what you think you want, that’s not my problem,” she says. “Not because I don’t care, but because I do care and I think fans deserve something new every time.”

Taking cues from grunge, slowcore, stoner-rock and shoegaze, the Texan trio have crafted a nine-track opus which is as exquisite of elegant detail as it is exemplary of skull-rumbling riff.

“True Widow, who grabbed those lackadaisical grunge breakdowns we didn’t even realize we missed, and drew them out in an epic swell of apathy and stoned whateverness” Fader Magazine.

There's absolutely no one like them, able to tread freely, humorously, and with great aplomb, around world music, as comfortable with klezmer, Eastern European rhythms, and Maghrebi melodies as they are with a cover of the jazz-rock classic, "Vehicle." That they do it with such a smile of their faces is the icing on the cake, because underneath is some stunning musicianship, easily heard in pieces like the demanding "Sandankso Horo" or the opener, "Kochari." ”

West African Dance of Madison brings the colorful fabric of African life to the Midwest. By adapting a centuries-old form of social expression for the modern stage, WADOMA bridges the divide between tradition and innovation.

The Sandrose band aims to keep their roots deeply trenched in the spirit of american traditional sounds with an open door that invites world wide and universal influences to step forward in both their studio recording endeavors and live performances, which are truly a full on circus of the senses set to "lay your bourdon at the door" and get back to freedom, in any sense of the word, and the kind of peace of mind that invokes the spirit of music and in turn the healing of the earth and beyond.

Phox is getting famous. Phox is amazing. See Phox rock your socks tonight in Madison at the High Noon Saloon.

Who: Jimmy Murn & the Heymakers - CD Release Party / Bes Monde / Mercy Whip / DJ Jenni Ladd of Leopard Print Lounge
When: Sat. May 26 9:30PM
Cost: $7 cover
Additional Info: 18 and up.

Clelebrate the release of Jimmy Murn + The Heymakers’ new CD tonight! They are a Power-Pop-Punk
alliance hailing from Madison, Wisconsin. Aiming true to a vision
Jimmy had when he was just 9 years old, the Heymakers are set to release
their collection of new manic pop gems on their self-released
"Hudson River Rookie". Recorded partially reel to reel @ DNA Studio with Mark Whitcomb, the
album features songs such as “Quicksand” with a chorus that imperatively
discloses "I will make you love me." The band intends to
win you over, each and every one of you. They wish to send you off
into the night with a smile on your face, you wondering how it got there,
and that melody playing over and over again in your head

Loosely translated Bes Monde means "to kiss the world", but the aim of this group is to destroy it. Short and sweet rock & roll inspired by 80's post-punk and the concept of "Beastmode", Bes Monde's live shows are full blown revivals. A tribute to days gone by with hope for a better tomorrow. Fans of primal catharsis should get off their collective asses and dive in.

Mercy Whip isn't just a compassionate sentence from your king, it's a musical and verbal assault on your ears! Join the High Noon Saloon as we welcome Mercy whip, who will be playing in front of their hometown Madison audience. Post punk stoner rock that looks like an episode of M*A*S*H*. Inspired
vocals and intense rhythms. New blood
and seasoned vets united in pursuit of teenage bliss.

The Leopard Print Lounge loves playing you all the best in modern & classic international garage rock, rockabilly, 50s & 6Ts, psych, FUZZ, freakbeat, mod & ted, Mersey & Medway, Northern soul, power pop, trash blues, R&B, and primitive rock-n-roll.

Chicago based Three Blue Teardrops formed back in the fall of 1991 playing and helping invent American Psychobilly in the an age when most bands were trying to cash in on the Seattle grunge sound. Three Blue Teardrops were at the forefront of a stateside rockabilly and swing revival with their unique and energetic style. A three piece trio of drums, upright bass and guitar, the band began writing and performing original songs that combined elements of 1970s punk, 1980's Hardcore, gut bucket blues, jungle swing, gospel, garage rock, hillbilly jazz and country harmony to the 1950s style raw rockabilly sounds of our Rock-N-Roll forefathers to create their own contemporary sound that was not stuck in the trappings of rockabilly, psychobilly, punk, blues or any single musical sub genre.

Who: The Antlers / Sat. Nite Duets
When: Wed. May 30 8:00PM
Cost: $15 cover
Additional Info: 18 and up.

Evolving from Peter Silberman's bedroom recordings to a fully realized band, for Brooklyn-based the Antlers, what started out as a solo lo-fi folk project progressed quickly into a colossal-sounding chamber pop group.
Their sound is frequently so immense it feels as if it's straining at the confines of the venue, as if in search of somewhere bigger. It probably will end up somewhere bigger in the not-too-distant future: your enjoyment is slightly marred by the feeling that in six months' time, whoever's in charge of TV background music is going to notice them, and the Antlers will end up soundtracking nature documentaries, departures from The X Factor and the grand unveiling of the kitchen knock-through at the end of DIY SOS. What the hip blogs will make of that remains to be seen.

Sat. Night Duets are college students from Milwaukee who play '90s-style college alt-rock. Unfortunately, a lot of the buzz they've generated — strangely, from atypical sources for indie rock criticism like GQ and CNN — seems to be fixated on the Duets' superficial similarities to the band Pavement. Pavement-comparisons aside, though, the Duets are a great act. In addition to being refreshingly competent musicians, these guys are honestly one of the few bands whose members play "musical instrument chairs" between songs in a way that isn't totally aggravating.

Dishing up foot-stomping, old time classics and tight high-and-lonesome harmonies, the Oak Street Ramblers are an essential cog in Madison’s burgeoning bluegrass scene. The Oak Street Ramblers were born in a garage on the corner of Oak and Union streets on the east side of Madison, Wisconsin. At first a loosely-knit collective made up of a revolving cast of old time and Americana enthusiasts, the Ramblers eventually coalesced into a core group of dedicated bluegrass pickers.

Who: Sleeping in the Aviary - "Vomit on Vinyl" Release Show / Caroline Smith And The Good Night Sleeps / Icarus Himself
When: Thu. May 31 9:00PM
Cost: $7 cover
Additional Info: 21 and up.

The garage-rock vagrants (Sleeping in the Aviary) seem to have also hit a creative stride musically too. Their forthcoming album is a retro hodgepodge of freewheeling rock ‘n’ roll and proto-punk crunch that sees the band sounding more focused and realized than ever before. Perhaps Sleeping in the Aviary’s most commendable feat is their ability to take some of the most basic elements of early rock ‘n’ roll and mold their music into something that sounds entirely original. Balancing the old with the new, there are dashes of fuzz and aural bluster that sit beneath all the traditional chord progressions and lush harmonies. For instance, “So Lonely” opens like any other assembly-line surf-rock ditty, only to explode into a swirl of screeching guitar solos and psychedelic noise.

In addition, the garage-rock vagrants (Sleeping in the Aviary) will be celebrating
a not-so-new, but so-very-exciting release for this show. In 2008,
the band had explored its heavily acoustic-based, fiery freak-folk
which has been described as sounding like Jeff Mangum listening to a
shitload of Bob Dylan before recording "In the Aeroplane Over the
Sea." This record was released by local label Science of Sound in
2008, but only on CD... and now... "Vomit" is being pressed on vinyl,
and will be available for purchase at the show! The digital download
that comes with the album also comes with several
previously-unreleased bonus tracks. Come get your vomit while it's hot!

Minneapolis' Caroline Smith & the Good Night Sleeps are rooted in folk rock, but expanding into contemporary indie rock. The catchy hooks remain, but their new sound destined to win the group a whole new set of fans, while pleasing the old ones

The band Icarus Himself knows opposites attract — musically at least. The Madison based trio juxtapose saccharine vocals with barks of emotions, death with love and ambient effects with roaring instrumentals. In fact, Icarus Himself thrives by marrying these seemingly contradictory elements to create their signature sound. And listeners love it.

Who: Euphony: The Pale Noir Experience / Aaimon / I†† / Preteen Pornstar / Channel 4Four / Textbreak
When: Fri. June 8 9:00PM
Cost: $5 cover
Additional Info: 21 and up.

ΔAIMON
This male/female duo from Southern California have been getting recognition and at an accelerated rate! They have been booked to play an array of events including the recent SXSW in Texas. ΔAIMON defy their sunny locale in exchange for beautiful, grim and sometimes harsh occult soundscapes; with compositions built on anxiety and paranoia giving way to a heightened feverish sexuality and erotic ritualism.
Coming from an extremely wide set of influences, their music is its own unique blend
of slow and menacing conjurations. Generally connected with the ‘drag‘ and ‘witchhouse‘
genres, ΔAIMON uses unconventional sound-design and tension within often
pop oriented song structures to instill unnerving sensation.

Noise echoes and ghost drones from this husband and wife’s dark and bloody ground…
I†† is a lo-fi hyper sigil casting spells in various mediums. There is a familiarity within their influences tying back to the early days of extreme experimentation in sounds from such groups as Coil, Death In June, and Throbbing Gristle. Though don't be mistaken. I†† is a sound all of their own.
The name itself is a sigil for magickal workings, but if it must be pronounced it is eyedoublecross.

Preteen Pornstar is an art group that started in 2002 using analog synthesizers and synthesized analgesics.
Through live shows in South and North California the project solidified into a core group of permanent members with more or less steady roles, and a cloud of 40 or so occasional collaborators.
Since 2002, the project has put out 5 'normal' full length albums, as well as a scattering of other releases including remixes, s3m kits, found audio tapes, and an illustrated children's book.
The only consistent threads are that any Preteen work must feature at least one of the core members, and must be available for free online. All releases of the project are available on either direct download or through bit torrent.

Blending the lines between music, video, and performance art, Channel 4Four is a bit of an enigma to the electronic and art scene.
His live performance is a complete audio/visual wacky circus experience. You will be shocked. In awe. And most likely won't understand what just happened to your mind when it is over. On this night he will be accompanied by live drumming by the one known as Buddha from their old band Sinistra 317.

Textbeak has always straddled the line between experimental industrial and dance. Hailing from the early ‘90s Columbus, Ohio rave scene he was a member of Body Release with Titonton Duvante (Residual Records), Todd Sines (Frankie, Planet E, Peacefrog, YORE), and Charles Noel. Through the mid ’90s and early 2000’s with his band Bath, to his current endeavors, he has always pushed the envelope with his compositions, artwork, text collages, and genre-blasting DJ sets. He host a weekly internet radio show that features guest mixed sets from producers and label owners all over the world in the dark electronic world.

Who: Katie Powderly / Pioneer / Small Houses
When: Wed. June 13 8:00PM
Cost: $7 cover
Additional Info: 21 and up.

Katie Powderly’s music permeates the boundaries of genre, inhabiting a space somewhere between alt-country and folk. It transcends the confines of linear chronology, as well; it is vintage and current, nostalgic and prophetic. Respectful of tradition while remaining relevant, Powderly presents a promising musical hybrid in her painstakingly hand-hewn tunes.

Pioneer classify themselves as an indie band and describe their sound as “vaguely folk-rock with some pop.” Despite its detail, such a description cannot adequately capture the refreshing tunes this talented trio from Madison conjures with their bows, picks and sticks.
The group’s lyrical portfolio includes an array of songs from slow ballads to reeling pop melodies. This varied sound has enabled Pioneer to play a diverse body of shows appearing alongside acts ranging from rappers to rock bands to fellow folk artists.

Small Houses is a Michigan based indie/folk project featuring the songs and poems of Flint native Jeremy Quentin. Artfully crafted finger-style guitar playing, and softly sung melodies describing the people, love, and homes of Quentin’s life.

North Dakotan Josh Harty made his singer-songwriter name in Madison, Wisconsin's thriving folk scene with his appealing, sympathetic vocal, comfortingly reminiscent of Gordon Lightfoot, and expert guitar style that sets you immediately at ease. Unadorned and honest, his writing on this album ("A Long List of Lies") is informed and knowledgeable way beyond his years, skilled in honouring what's gone before whilst sounding absolutely of today and his stories are simple, believable- this guys knows his stuff.

June 17 8:30PM
Cost: $8 cover
Additional Info: 21 and up.

For fifteen years, Witch Mountain has flown the flag of doom over its cloudy hometown of Portland, OR. Formed in 1997 by guitarist/songwriter Rob Wrong (M99, Iommi Stubbs) and drummer/manager Nathan ‘Nanotear’ Carson (Point Line Plane, Two Ton Boa), the group has stayed loud and proud through a variety of lineups and musical epochs. Today, the band is recognized as a leader in some of the most renowned metal communities in the world—locally alongside Agalloch, YOB, and Red Fang—and internationally as part of the Profound Lore label and Nanotear Booking rosters.

Lord Dying come from Portland, Oregon, a place abundant with purveyors of the heavy riff...a region where the inhabitants are plagued with nerve and joint damage due to lack of sunlight. In a time when everyone is trying to out-sludge or out-doom each other Lord Dying gives something less than a fuck. They are a metal band with members of Black Elk , Portals, Le Force, and Cremains, who in their short time as a band have shared the stage with the likes of Unsane, Red Fang, Yob, and Valient Thorr.

June 19 6:00PM
Cost: $5 cover
Additional Info: 21 and up.

Prairie Empire, who are split between Brooklyn and Portland, OR, and led by a vocalist with a very obvious (and very pretty) Joni Mitchell influence. The quintet play a ’60s-style folk, replete with somber strings and downtempo percussion. And there is real beauty in the subtle details you need headphones to pick up on, like the sleigh bells jingling in the back of the chorus, or the faint digital vocal underlay on the outro. The melancholy air of “Snow” would perfectly soundtrack an afternoon of wistfully looking out the window at the treacherous streets below.

Madison, Wisconsin's own Tiny Band make mighty music from wee instruments. This is no novelty act, Bub, but real music, really pretty, a really big show. The songs come from our own gooey innards and from our favorites, like the Velvet Underground, Talking Heads and others from historic left field. Julia Ziemer sings and plays baritone ukulele, Lisa Marine sings and plays the Mando Bird, Matt Appleby plays soprano ukulele, Stephen Burke plays mandolin and Dan Hobson plays a small drum with a cymbal the size of a silver dollar pancake. There is power in tiny. Why? We don't know. It doesn't matter. Rock tinily with us.

Who: Jake Shut's 40th Birthday Bash / Bon Squad / The Skintones / Droids Attack / Pink Mink
When: Sat. June 23 9:00PM
Cost: $7 cover
Additional Info: 21 and up.

Bon Squad is an all AC/DC tribute band (Bon Scott era) from members of Brainerd, Brass Tacks, Skintones, Heliphant, and Tormentula.

The Skintones bring enough of their own creative energies to bear on the music that's not easy to categorize. Their "eclectically pleasing" sound has elated positive crowd response in and out of Madison. They make sure that every show is fresh, and often tailor the playlist to the crowd. Sometimes people don't immediately catch on however. "I think that when people don't recognize something immediately they don't know if it's innovative or if it sucks‚ there's not a frame of reference," says Skintones drummer Tony Leskinen. If you listen to The Skintones album and don't smile at least once, whether you like it or not, you're probably dead.

Blazing guitar riffs, thick low end, and highly imaginative rhythm structures make up the foundation of this "heady" metal outfit from Madison, WI. (Droids Attack) Brandishing a full bodied tone and a taught signature style, they slice through the sterile ceiling fan churn of our modern day Line 6 heroes like a kershaw through the warm neck flesh of a thousand infidels. The Droid's unique sound suggests a more natural progression between Black Sabbath and Tool, and their throw down approach to the stage has consistently lead the most scowling of metal heads to the front row beaming with delight. It is fun to have your ass kicked this good.

Pink Mink started gigging feverishly and winning over audiences with their dynamic stage presence, howling guitar solos, and terse, poppy songwriting. Though their guitar playing hearkens back to pioneering riot girl bands like Babes in Toyland and Bikini Kill, the melodies are joyous and the lyrics nostalgic

Amorphous Mold is a Madison, WI based group performing classic rock covers and their own material. It is a 3 piece with guitar bass and drums. The influences of music are endless as each member brings a different style to the fray. Some of the bands we cover are Rush, Blood Sweat &Tears, The Who, Hendrix and much more...

Patchwork Monkey is a blues rock outfit that was born in Madison, Wisconsin in 2002. This 5-piece band has Alec Stanley and Jason Vitela on guitar, Doogie Venden on bass, Joel Croyle on drums, and Rebecca Sites with lead vocal. Rebecca sings with edgy and bawdy attitude. Often compared to Janis Joplin, her emotive performance and vocal prowess easily bewitch an audience. Jason Vitela on electric guitar really tears it up, showing his blues roots and his artistic maturity. Alec on electric guitar deftly teases out some Southern Rock influence, and plays a mean slide too.

Who: Tyranny is Tyranny / Fucking Hotlights
When: Wed. June 27 5:30PM
Cost: $5 cover
Additional Info: 21 and up.

Tyranny is one of the most impressive acts in funeral doom metal scene nowadays. The music of these two guys is very slow and haunting; one of the guitars is playing ultraslow riffs, while the other guitar is playing unearthly and monotonous melodies. Sometimes you can hear notes played by a keyboard, these melodies are very ghostly as well. There is not a single tempo-break or a rhythm-change on this CD, moreover the themes are quite repetitive and all the 3 songs have very similar structure, so this isn’t an album which would you call diversified. Of course musical variety is not the most important aim of the band, on the contrary: these guys’ ambition is to play the most sinister and monotonous music, that’s funeral doom, isn’t it?

The Fucking Hotlights are a Buffalo, NY based band who play an impressive style of diverse and heavy music with varied influences. On one end, the band incorporates 90's Amrep style noise rock mixed with more chaotic and at times, tense music made popular by bands such as The Icarus Line, Blood Brothers, Cancer Bats, or Acid Tiger. At other times I hear the angular discordance of bands such as Fugazi or Drive Like Jehu. Add to that, the Southern rock swagger of Every Time I Die or The Joan Benet. The end result is a beautifully orchestrated style of controlled chaos. I can almost smell the booze and sweat coming out of my speakers. Great stuff."

Who: Left Lane Cruiser / Reverend James Leg
When: Sun. July 1 8:00PM
Cost: $8 cover
Additional Info: 21 and up.

Left Lane Cruiser’s high-voltage blues sound is downright nasty. Blistering electric slide guitar and leering vocals distill old-school Mississippi blues down to its rowdiest essence. This band has some major mojo.

If James Leg’s record sounds uncannily like the guy who sings for the Black Diamond Heavies it’s because he’s John Wesley Myers of that same band. Solitary Pleasure dips into common musical paint pots (bluesy keyboards, greasy soul and raucous garage), mixes in a bit more pop and splatters the lot over a wide canvas. Leg’s guttural vocal is at the heart of this music and his trademark Fender Rhodes accompaniment isn’t going anywhere soon. These eight original songs are about messed-up or messy girls, blown dough and the rigors of coming down from the road.” – I-94 BAR

Dale's pioneering use of Middle Eastern and Eastern European melodies (learned organically through his familial heritage) was among the first in any genre of American popular music, and predated the teaching of such "exotic" scales in guitar-shredder academies by two decades. The breakneck speed of his single-note staccato picking technique was unrivalled until it entered the repertoires of metal virtuosos like Eddie Van Halen, and his wild showmanship made an enormous impression on the young Jimi Hendrix. But those aren't the only reasons Dale was once called the father of heavy metal.

Who: The Sugar Jets (CD Release Party) / The Pamphleteers
When: Sat. July 14 5:30PM
Cost: $5 cover
Additional Info: 21 and up.

The Sugar Jets used to knock out noisy pop tunes back when a few folks
with dial-up were reading blurbs on bands on the internets.
Then the times changed, and TSJ took their scratched-up Monkees records
back down to the basement, reproduced, bought Subarus (sans Erik - he
bought a Chevy), and quit smoking (except Erik). But like Ernest Borgnine at an orgy, they
pop back in the room every once in a while to scare the newbies and make
the seasoned swingers shake their heads. Turn the lights on, The Sugar Jets are standing in the doorway and just dropped their towels. Still distorted pop for burnouts. Come out for this
ultra-rare treat when the Boys will be releasing their first new Album in nine years!

The Pamphleteers derive from a deep and abiding commitment to the hook and
the occasional trip to the whitewashed stratosphere. Blending myriad
influences from the early British Invasion, to nascent psychedelia, to spaced
out proto-metal, and on to 1980’s new wave, the group demonstrates that pop
and droning white noise are not mutually exclusive. With pounding, rhythmic
melody at the fore, the yield simultaneously consists of tuneful nuggets
and aggressively moody dirges.

The Chicago-based three-piece consists of former members of The Dials,
The Returnables, and Swiss Dots. Yet, as those bands looked to 1977 as
their launching point, The Pamphleteers delve further into the past to
construct
their turn on reverb, fuzz, and boy/girl vocal repartee.

Who: The People Brothers Band / Aaron Williams & the Hoodoo / Clovis Mann
When: Sat. July 14 9:30PM
Cost: $7 cover
Additional Info: 21 and up.

From humble beginnings at late-night open jams in a downtown Madison bar, The People Brothers Band have solidified over the past three years into an eight-piece Rhythm and Soul powerhouse. Their eclectic blend of original grooves, conscientious lyrics, soulfully mastered vocal and instrumental work, along with diverse self-tailored covers, holds the crowd on the dance floor and keeps them begging for more. From Funk to Soul, Rock to Reggae, Folk to R & B, they're guaranteed keep the audience on their feet.

“Aaron Williams and the Hoodoo prove that the magic and the mystery of their work are simply waiting to be discovered nationwide. They’re eclectic, they’re electric, and they’re energetic!”
-Blues Blast Magazine-2011 | “Aaron Williams and his mastery of the guitar…made it hard to look away from the stage. Williams oozed cool and talent and made it impossible not to focus 100% of your whole being stage front.”
-Rob Kosmeder- Americana Gazette-

Highly influenced by the blues, Clovis Mann consists of chief songwriter Dan Walkner on guitar and vocals, Dan Plourde on the bass and vocals, and James Zander on the drum kit. Heavy, driving rhythms lay a solid foundation for Walkner to build focused melody lines into soaring solos and, at times, all out warfare. Clovis Mann’s original compositions are songs of struggle and redemption, life and love; Walkner’s lyrics are honest and heartfelt while maintaining a gritty, blue-collar feel. Their set is high energy and highly danceable, drawing from bluegrass and country roots as well as rock’n’roll.

7/26 SUMMER FREE MUSIC SERIES - On Our Patio - / Evan Murdock & the Imperfect Strangers.
You might catch a Folky type song from Evan Murdock. Other nights you will catch mainly acoustic guitar song he has put together. Whatever the case may be, enjoy some original music from Evan Murdock tonight at the High Noon Saloon.

Skeletonwitch's vocals are characteristically in the death metal/black metal vein, with Chance Garnette performing both the guttural shouts and the higher pitched shrieks.

With the volume, technicality and intensity that embodies heavy metal and the overarching catchiness and longevity of stoner and classic rock, Barn Burner capture a signature sound that cannot be easily placed or categorized. Cultivating the principles of partying and the ever lasting might of the riff, Barn Burner creates a live atmosphere that render an audience incapable of standing still. Whether it is giving your best friend a well-deserved swill of beer or lovingly smashing the bottle over his head to the sound of a ruthless riff, Barn Burner will fulfill the demands of its listeners. Having finished their second record and follow up to the critically acclaimed Bangers, Barn Burner are prepared to unleash something more fierce…

Who: Sarah Lou Richards / Beth Kille
When: Wed. July 25 8:00PM
Cost: $7 cover
Additional Info: 21 and up.

Sarah Lou Richards stands at the hands of Americana tradition; a singer/songwriter and compelling, bedrock artist with energy, emotion and the work ethic of a new generation.
The breadth of Richards’ personal and professional life infuses a positive spirit, yet fierce intellect. Her music showcases one who is not afraid to be a real sinner and a quiet saint.
Today, she continues to embrace her growing fan base at a directory of honky-tonks, watering holes and music venues across the country. Her homemade success earns endless recognition as it comes alive without the benefits of a recording contract or publishing deal, but has stemmed solely from Richards’ pure passion for song and voice.

Singer, songwriter & multi-instrumentalist Beth Kille has risen through the ranks of the acoustic-rock/Americana music scene since her debut in 2000. Her music is a hybrid of rock, country, folk and blues that resonates with diverse musical influences ranging from the soul of the Indigo Girls, the grit of Melissa Etheridge, the sultry vocals of Norah Jones & the groove of Ani DiFranco.

She led the highly decorated Madison, WI rock band, Clear Blue Betty, for 6 years, putting out 3 award winning albums. During her tenure, Clear Blue Betty dominated the Wisconsin music scene, garnering a Wisconsin Area Music Industry (WAMI) award in 2008 for Best Band of the Southeast Quadrant and 7 Madison Area Music Awards (Rock Album of the year- twice, Rock Band of the Year- twice, Entertainer of the Year, Best Female Vocalist & Song of the Year).

Who: Benefit for Second Harvest / The Lucas Cates Band / The Northern Hooks / Ready the Colors
When: Thu. July 26 8:30PM
Cost: $10 cover
Additional Info: 21 and up. $7 w/ non-perishable food item

Led by the rich, versatile vocals of Lucas Cates and wrapped by refined, expressive harmonies and musicianship from guitarist/violinist Kenny Leiser, bassist Mark Noxon and drummer Jesse Warmka, The Lucas Cates Band (TLCB) is quickly turning a major regional buzz into a national draw. Their blend of pop, rock, blues, reggae, funk and alt-country makes the Madison-based band hard to pigeonhole but easy to enjoy, if you love good music. A Broadjam review describes their sound as "unique pop-country-rock-punk-cool." And music site Space City Rock out of Dallas, Texas writes "if your attention isn't caught by the soothing vocals, great acoustics or funny lyrics.. then you, my friend.. should check to see if you're still breathing."

Finding strength in numbers, THE NORTHERN HOOKS have grown to a five-member band. “We share a musical bond that has shaped our collaborative vision and sound" says David Wheaton, guitarist and lead vocals. Remaining members include Steven Hollerup on guitar and lead vocals, Galen Pardo on bass, Jason Powers on keyboard and percussion, and Rob Borja on drums. Musically influenced by too many remarkable artists to list, they believe in the past and current music that has attributes of soul, passion, release, and risk
7/28 MikeFest II

As Ready for Colors came together to write music, it quickly became obvious that there existed a unique and powerful chemistry between them that defied the short time they had been together. Their style emerged as a homogenization of indie rock and electronica. As one exuberant fan put it: "You guys sound like Kings of Leon, Coldplay and U2 had a baby." They had developed a sound--they only needed a name. After much deliberation, they decided on Ready the Colours. "We wanted a name that captures the essence of who we are and what we're about," Raul explains.

Who: Mindy Smith
When: Sat. August 4 6:00PM
Cost: $15 cover
Additional Info: 21 and up.

Mindy Smith was born and raised in Long Island, N.Y., but moved to Knoxville, Tenn., with her father after the death of her mother in 1991. In the South, she soaked up the sounds of Appalachia and fell in love with acoustic, jazz and blues music. She moved to Nashville in 1998 to pursue a career in music and developed her unique vocal style, writing and acoustic skills while performing and signing at clubs and writers’ nights.

Smith is careful not to disclose particulars about individual songs because she worries that might interfere with the listening experience. “People tend to relate to my songs because of their own experiences. And they’ll take what works in their own life away from this record.” But rest assured all her music comes from the heart. “Everything here is definitely from my personal experience,” she concludes. “Heartbreak, healing, all that stuff… it’s all legit.” And you can hear that honesty in every note she sings.

Who: Built To Spill / Helvetia / Sister Crayon
When: Tue. September 18 7:30PM
Cost: $22 cover / $20 advance
Additional Info: 21 and up.

When Built To Spill wanted to find out what their music sounded like they locked themselves in Doug Martschs garage. Without a tentative conclusion or even a hypothesis the four members began to experiment. Their collaborative efforts lasted seasons and yielded dozens of hours of ADAT tape. The album You In Reverse documents the newest branch of Built To Spills chaotic, yet elegant evolution.

Like Times New Viking, Helvetia reminds us of a font, but we know ancient Swiss history well enough not to be fooled (uh, merci, Wiki). Plus, this is guitar-centric rocking pop of a different sort. The Seattle duo — featuring 2/3 of Duster — can conjure a bit of Built To Spill in frontman Jason Albertini’s voice and exploratory guitars. We thought maybe we were just hearing things, but no — Helvetia’s toured with BTS in the past, are doing so again soon, and their lineup’s fleshed-out live by members of Doug Martsch’s elder band.

If Sister Crayon’s songs reflect the hurt and melancholy of the human experience, their performances represent the inevitable catharsis. The band’s live show is an explosion of passion and sound, a plea for the audience to unleash their own troubles into the ether.
