Who: Bob Log III / Scott H. Biram / with special guests Left Lane Cruiser
When: Wed. July 23 9:00PM
Cost: $10 cover / $10 advance
Additional Info: 18 and up.

Bob Log III is part vaudevillian and part delta-blues wunderkind: Much notoriety was borne of his one-man-band shtick, in which he wears a motorcycle helmet with built-in microphone, and plays drums with jerry-rigged foot pedals--but truthfully, he's a master of delta-blues on both the six-string and slide guitar, having been schooled by none other than RL Burnside, T-Model Ford and others. His show has been honed by constant touring, and it's a brilliantly raunchy good time. Also playing: Scott H. Biram is so badass that he once played a show in a wheelchair, with an IV dangling from his arm, just a month after being hit head-on by an 18-wheeler going 75 mph. He is a self-proclaimed "Dirty Old One Man Band," and lashing together blues, hillbilly and country with raucous punk and godless metal. Left Lane Cruiser opens.

Who: Deadbolt / Knuckel Drager (CD Release) / Roboman
When: Thu. July 24 9:00PM
Cost: $15 cover
Additional Info: 21 and up.

Deadbolt is the only original band still with San Diego's Cargo label, which has released albums by Rocket from the Crypt, Blink-182, and many more. Deadbolt labels themselves "the scariest band in the world," playing creepy voodoo-surf music for the damned, with a result that is something like "a cross between the Blues Brothers and The Cramps." (Spin Magazine) Joining them are Madison's own Knuckel Drager, who may well be the world's heaviest surf band: They bring monster-mask alter egos and a heavy-metal intensity to their instrumental surf-rawk. This will be the release party for Knuckel Drager's new CD, "You do better!". Roboman the one-man band opens.

July 25 10:00PM
Cost: $8 cover
Additional Info: 21 and up.

Creating a sound that is as unlikely as it is awesome, Brooklyn's Dub Trio mix spacey dub reggae grooves with ferocious punk rock with a result that must be seen to be believed. They've toured with acts ranging from Helmet to Gogol Bordello, and their first ever non-instrumental track featured vocals courtesy of Mike Patton. They played an awesome show here in February. 'Nuff said? Czarbles plays tightly arranged, frenetic, spazz-rock instrumentals, while Dick the Bruiser is a punishing 2-piece bass and drums combo.

The Melvins were Kurt Cobain's favorite band before he hit it big, and they probably kick even more ass now than they did in the '80s thanks to the fact that when combined with Big Business, they now have two of the best rock drummers in the world playing together at the same time on stage. There's not enough space to write about all of the Melvins' exploits, but they've served up more straight-faced, tongue-in-cheek musical jokes than any band should be able to get away with, solely because the joking is inextricably fused with HEAVY metal songwriting genius. As The Onion said of their newest album, Brain Thrust Mastery: "One enjoyable dance-rock album could be passed off as a fluke, but With Love And Squalor's follow-up suggests that not as much guilt should be attached to the pleasure derived from We Are Scientists.
Who: Califone / The Judy Green / Sleeping in the Aviary
When: Sat. August 16 9:30PM
Cost: $12 cover
Additional Info: 18 and up.

"Chicago quartet Califone took shape shortly after the breakup of leader Tim Rutili's former band, Red Red Meat. On Califone's 1998 debut EP, they picked up where Mr. Rutili's former band left off, inclined toward grungy guitar feedback and heavy, galloping rhythms. While the noisy rock thread never disappeared entirely, two additional sides of Califone emerged in the next couple of years. One was the unplugged acoustic project, wherein Mr. Rutili rewrote depressionera ballads and blues. And the other was the subtle purveyor of gauzy atmosphere heard on 2002's "Deceleration One" and 2003's "Deceleration Two," specializing in creaky improv designed to soundtrack experimental films. That's been part of the fun with each new Califone album: You never know which band is going to show up. Through nine years and eight records for four different labels, the band has zigged and zagged at will." --Mark Richardson (New York Sun) The Judy Green, a Califone affiliate band complete with horn section, displays a "drowsy sense of psychedelica tempered by teeth-grinding intensity." -bwcitypaper.com (birmingham, AL) Local purveyors of awesomeness Sleeping in the Aviary open.

If you buy a ticket online and are under 21, be prepared to pay $2 at door.

It's baaack...Madison's biggest, longest-running electro/industrial/darkwave festival, featuring a host of national and even International performers. About this year's acts: Coming out of nowhere in early 2004, DJ Scandy's debut single "Split" (on Great Stuff) took the dance world by storm, and became a record crate staple of DJs around the world. Scandy's signature groovy baselines are guaranteed to get everybody's body rocking! Claire Voyant "weave gossamer cocoons of ethereal pop. I was going to qualify these cocoons as being 'comforting and sheltering,' but that denies the shadows and despair which streak through a number of these songs. -Mark Teppo (earpollution.com) Madison's own Sensuous Enemy blends driving drum sequences and hard techno and EBM synth lines and combines powerful velvety vocals with a subtle use of orchestral strings, piano, and vocal harmony, along with live electric rhythm guitar and drums that create a sublime visual stage presence. Cervello Elettronico's new album can best be described as a mix of Power Noise, EBM, and Techno. From start to finish, different layers of sound are tied together by heavy bass, driving rhythms, abrasive percussions, and meticulously placed samples. DJ Whiterabbit spins a brutal dancefloor mix of electro, industrial, ebm, powernoise, gothic, synth, and trance beats, while DJ I.Z. spins the best in dark music, including industrial, EBM, synthpop, powernoise, gothic and other experimental genres.

A gig opening for Devendra Banhart in 2003 quickly led to collaborations with Banhart and the national release of her own songs. "Hunter's winding melodies possess a mysterious déjà vu quality, like lost tribal folk hymns, and the captivating sense of mystery inherent in her voice, which is at once both husky and wispy, is enhanced by keeping the subject matter purposefully vague...The emotional complexity-or rather, saddled contradictory feelings-aren't all that set her apart from her peers: She also draws on influences from outside folk which, largely due to her finger-style treatment and accompaniment choices, wind up adhering to a folk template."
Who: Neil Hamburger / Pleaseeasaur / Nice Peter
When: Wed. September 10 8:00PM
Cost: $10 cover
Additional Info: 21 and up.

Comedian Neil Hamburger has released at least a dozen albums, many on the Drag City label, and he tours the world incessantly, performing in venues ranging from decrepit small-town pizza parlors to the Olympic Stadium in Sydney, Australia. He manages to be honest and surreal, probing the very boundaries of art. He behaves like a crazy hybrid, part Don Rickles and part Woody Allen; a demented animal that paces the stage and delivers high concept jokes. His show creates a deliciously queasy, tense vibe, capturing the hapless Hamburger living out of suitcases and storage lockers, depressed and on the verge of divorce, doggedly forcing the gift of laughter onto unwilling recipients and then inexorably collapsing into abject self-pity and suicidal ideation, while never quite giving up. As the Washington Post has said, he is "the most improbable of cult figures...an exercise in entertainment masochism." Also on the bill, Pleaseeasaur is so dynamically absurd that they have been signed to a lengthy contract by Comedy Central: Their act is equal parts surreal lunacy, pop orthodoxy, literary syntax, infomercial music and sheer idiocy. Nice Peter opens.

He played, wrote, and sang in bands while studying theatre at Marquette University. After graduating, he traveled to Ireland, where he learned the trade of busker on the streets of Dublin. He's turned that trade into his life, logging 300 shows a year while his albums have garnered consistent praise from critics. "The subtle power of his voice, a husky, hushed baritone... understated, at once sophisticated and intimate... as cover-worthy as Randy Newman, Elvis Costello and Dar Williams." (The Washington Post) "Peter Mulvey is consistently the most original and dynamic of the US singer-songwriters to tour these shores… A phenomenal performer with huge energy, a quick fire, quirky take on life, and an extraordinary guitar style… a joy to see." (The Irish Times) Opener Antje Duvekot has been garnering some critical praise of her own: "This is a brilliant, brilliant album." says former Rolling Stone music editor Dave Marsh of her debut, 'Big Dream Boulevard'. "I have had this reaction once in the last 10 years and that was the first time I heard Patty Griffin."
